Wockhardt Hospitals Sheds Light on Avascular Necrosis: The Unseen Aftermath of COVID-19

As the healthcare community continues to grapple with the long-lasting effects of COVID-19, Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central stands at the vanguard in the battle against an unsettling development – Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the hip.

Among those struck by this debilitating condition are Mr. Dhananjay Vasant Wagaskar, age 38, and Ms. Ragini Yadav, age 26. Both patients presented with severe hip pain and were subsequently diagnosed with AVN via MRI imaging. Interestingly, Ms. Ragini had no confirmed history of COVID-19, suggesting that the exact causes of AVN in the context of the pandemic are yet to be fully understood.

Dr. Mudit Khanna, a seasoned Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, points out the crucial importance of early diagnosis. He reveals that while X-Rays may not show any signs in the early stages of AVN, an MRI scan is instrumental in detecting the condition in its infancy.

When AVN is far advanced, Total Hip Replacement Surgery is often the only recourse. At Wockhardt Hospitals, this procedure has been executed with exceptional success. Through replacing the damaged hip joint with an artificial one, the surgery alleviates pain and restores mobility. Notably, the advancements in materials and surgical techniques have made this procedure increasingly effective for patients of all ages.
