Talking About Neuropsychiatric Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease

The Alliance for Aging Research introduces a novel video series aimed at educating the public on neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) associated with Alzheimer’s disease. These videos aim to de-stigmatize NPS, fostering discussions about care plans and supporting Alzheimer’s patients who deserve the utmost attention and care.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms, caused by diseases and injuries affecting the brain, alter our interactions with the world and result in significant behavioral and psychological changes. Symptoms ranging from anxiety, depression, agitation, sleep disturbances, to socially inappropriate behavior and more, often lead to social isolation due to stigma. Recognizing and addressing these symptoms is as critical as handling changes to memory and cognition that Alzheimer’s disease brings.

The video series comprises powerful narratives from a clinician, caregivers, and Alzheimer’s patient advocates, offering a comprehensive perspective on the matter. Carolyn Clevenger, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner and Director of Emory University’s Integrated Memory Care Clinic, sheds light on NPS and her experience talking with families dealing with Alzheimer’s.

Furthermore, Carrie Shaw, who cared for her Alzheimer’s-affected mother and is the CEO and Founder of Embodied Labs, shares her journey developing technology to help caregivers empathize with their loved ones’ experiences. Shon Lowe and Terrie Montgomery, a caregiver-daughter duo, provide practical advice and share personal experiences living with Alzheimer’s, resonating with many in similar circumstances.

Finally, Jay Reinstein, an Alzheimer’s patient and advocate, urges others to seek help for their NPS and to live their lives beyond their symptoms. He encourages people to look beyond the label of Alzheimer’s and focus on living life fully.

The creation of these videos has been supported by Otsuka and Lundbeck. To learn more about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease-related neuropsychiatric symptoms and watch these expert videos, visit
